Electric Junkyard Gamelan

WORLD MUSIC: Electric Junkyard Gamelan

A five-piece ensemble that performs original groove driven music on sculpturally striking instruments invented by leader Terry Dame. Its style was initially inspired by traditional Gamelan music of Indonesia but today incorporates influences from funk to Indian classical, Klezmer to hiphop. The group performs on Dame's innovative instruments such as the Rubarp and Big Barp (electric rubber band harps), the Sitello (an electric cello/sitar combo), the Terraphone (copper pipe horn), the Clayrimba (a three octave tuned clay pot "marimba") and an arsenal of percussion instruments fashioned from kitchen ware, old farm equipment, turntable platters and truck springs.

Storyteller will be Lauren Hooker and she will be presenting the ever-popular "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" by Eric Carle, using original songs, movement, percussion instruments, puppets and a giant moon mask.

Soprano and opera appreciation workshop leader, Christine Cullen, presents arias from your favorite operas, performed with special guest singers of great talent. Ray Calderone (tenor), Jay Gould (bass-baritone), Jordan Wentworth (soprano), accompanied by opera expert Warren George Wilson (piano). This evening's performance will include excerpts from Verdi's Falstaff and La Traviata, along with aria's from other favorite operas.

International artists and activists, Shaun Bengson and Abigail Nessen Bengson, present their original off-Broadway production,The Magic Show: The Story of the Barefoot Angels, about individuals simultaneously impacted by Hurricane Katrina and a volcano eruption in El Salvador, where Abigail was teaching at the time. It is a unique blend of instrumental and vocal music, dramatic monologue, and unusual characters, that opened to acclaim at The Culture Project in Manhattan. This piece was developed with David Eppel, acclaimed co-founder of South Africa's Market Theater. “(Abigail has) not only a tremendous musical talent, but also a raw honesty and sincere righteousness.” – George Hunka, New York Times
