On the Rise: Shiau-uen Ding

Shiau-uen Ding

Devoted to exposing audiences to exciting works by composers spanning the gamut from Baroque, later traditions to that of more recent and experimental developments, pianist Shiau-uen Ding brings the ephemeral and transient moment of music into high dramatic relief. Composers have written and dedicated many works to this extraordinary young talent, including Hammerklavier XIX: Hymnen der Welt (Afghanistan to Zimbabwe) by Moritz Eggert; Balladei by Christopher Bailey, and Coal Dust and Xiao Xiao by Gao Ping. Ms. Ding is also a member of the Cincinnati RealTime Composers, and she founded and directs the NeXT Ens, an ensemble dedicated to commissioning and performing new electro-acoustic music works.

Born outside of Philadelphia, PA, Christopher Bailey turned to music composition in his late 'teens, and to electroacoustic composition during his studies at the Eastman School of Music, and later at Columbia University. Recent performances of his music occurred in Taiwan, Germany, and in Seoul, Korea, where he was a 2nd-Prize recipient in the International Composers Competition. Other awards include prizes from BMI and ASCAP, and the Bearns Prize. In summer 2007, he released a CD of piano music with electronics, featuring Shiau-Uen Ding and Jacob Rhodebeck performing recent piano works.
