In her high school, Avery is known as the “black track star.” In her Brooklyn neighborhood she is the adopted daughter of white Jewish lesbians with an older Puerto-Rican brother and a younger Korean brother. At home she’s simply Avery. Now Avery is on a quest to meet her African-American birth mother in Texas. Filmmaker Nicole Opper of New York tells Avery’s story in the documentary film, “Off and Running.”
