Exceptional Trees
Exceptional trees are defined by their rarity, impressive size, significant age, distinctive condition, cultural importance, or contribution to a grove of trees, often warranting special protection and designation as heritage trees. Examples include trees recognized for unique characteristics, such as the ancient Baobab trees or the ancient General Sherman sequoia. In cities like Seattle, an exceptional tree’s protection is enforced by a specific ordinance that restricts its removal without a thorough assessment and approval from the city’s Department of Planning and Development (DPD).
To highlight the trees that are deemed exception in The Troll’s Knoll Park we made a series of decorative tiles that were placed near each of the trees. Erin Fox did the scientific drawings of the trees and Michiko Tanaka made the scientific drawings into tiles that were embellished with mosaics and placed throughout The Troll’s Knoll.
