TWP new media based initiative, Just AART(Artist, Activist, Relying on Technology) young people a chance to facilitate a unique community based program using music, spoken work and drama to make Public Service Announcements. The Public Service Announcements (PSA), in both audio and video, are shared with our media partners to combat the issues such as HIV/AIDS, Domestic Violence, Bullying and more. The newly trained members now serve as the facilitators for subsequent Just AART projects ensuring the sustainability of the project year round. Just AART empowers youth to use their training to create their own, youth inspired mass media productions promoting healthy life styles in a manner that positively impact the social norms of this community. In the first phase of the three year initiative, Teens With a Purpose has successfully trained and developed fifty members to facilitate a community based peer led program that incorporates art and technology as education and a bridge to self-improvement and youth empowerment. Through this project, Teens With a Purpose built a recording studio to create and mass produce, original music, spoken word and videos to be used throughout our community. Students also learned how to operate Garage Band, Pro tools 10, and Maschine for a basic and advance knowledge in how to record sessions, mix and beginner mastering. They created a total of 54 songs which were featured at local events and radio stations like: FUSE Teen Fest, Norfolk, VA; AFRICANA, Virginia Beach, VA; Suffolk Teen Summit, Suffolk, VA; PHAT Conference, Norfolk, VA; No Holding Back, Newport News, VA and more.
