The Female Mariners Project (2014)

The Female Mariners Project focuses on women who live and work on the water. Contrary to the history of ocean exploration dominated by men, these contemporary women live and work aboard boats of various size and function, challenging the images of sirens and mermaids often associated with women on the water. The variety of images question our assumptions about class structure and gender bias through depictions of individuals at work and leisure, above and below decks. The breadth of imagery captures the unique lives and personalities of this autonomous community.
